DudL "Was ist ein Femizid? Über die Spielarten patriarchaler Gewalt"

Das letzte DudL des Kalenderjahres fand am 16.12.2025 unter der Leitung von Sabine Patricia Maier mit dem Titel “Was ist ein Femizid? Über die Spielarten patriachaler Gewalt” statt. Sabine Maier war wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Kriminologie der Universität Tübingen im DFG-Projekt “Femizide in Deutschland” und als solche Teil des Forscher*innenteams, das vor wenigen Wochen die vielbeachtete gleichnamige Studie vorstellte.

In ihrer Präsentation beleuchtete Sabine Maier zunächst die klassische Definition des Femizid-Begriffs, als Mord an einer Frau auf Grund der Tatsache, dass sie eine Frau ist. Bereits hier illustrierte Maier die Problematik des Begriffs daran, dass diese Auslegung von “Femizid”, ebenso wie das Wort, umkämpft ist und von manchen Forscher*innen noch um weitere Merkmale, wie dass der Täter ein Mann sein muss, ergänzt wird.

Anschließend ging Sabine Maier auf die konkreten Ergebnisse der Studie ein. Sie legte dar, wie das Forschungsteam den Femizid-Begriff in einen weite, die strukturelle Benachteiligung miteinbezieht und eine enge Femizid-Auffassung operationalisierte. Anschließend ging sie auf die Auswertung der Fälle, die aus den Statistiken von fünf Bundesländern im Jahr 2017 gespeist wurden, ein. Besonderes Augenmerk legte Sabine Maier dabei auf die Punkte, in denen das Konzept des Femizids zu kurz greift, zum Beispiel in den Fällen in denen (männliche) Kinder getötet werden, um eine Frau besonders zu verletzen oder in denen bei Racheakten an Partnerinnen Unbeteiligte zu Schaden kommen.

In der anschließenden Diskussion wurden die altersbedingten Femizide noch einmal genauer ins Auge gefasst unter anderem mit der Frage, ob Möglichkeiten der Sterbehilfe deren Zahl wohl eindämmen könnte, verbunden. Darüber hinaus wurde thematisiert, wo der Platz von nicht-binären oder trans-Personen im Femizidbegriff gefunden werden kann.

The calender year’s last DudL was brought to us by Sabine Patricia Maier under the title “What is a femicide? On forms of patriarchal violence” on 16th of December 2025. Sabine Maier used to be a research associate in the DFG project “Femicides in Germany” at the University of Tübingen’s Institute for Criminology. As such she was part of the team that presented the eponymous and highly regarded study a few weeks ago.

In her presentation, Sabine Maier gave us an overview of conceptualizations of the term “femicide” thereby highlighting the contestations of the term and problems that come with using it. She thus started with the classical definition of it being a murder of a woman due to the fact that she is a woman and pointed out how that definition is complemented with additional aspects by other scholars such as the notion that the murderer necessarily needs to be a man.

After illustrating the conceptual problems that come with “femicide”, Sabine Maier presented the results of the study she conducted together with her colleagues. She showed how they operationalized the concept of femicides into a wider term that includes structural injustices and disproportionate affectedness and into a narrower one. She then went on to the results of the study in which the team analyzed the 2017 criminal statistics of five German states. Special attention was given to those cases in which the classical notion of “femicide” does not adequately fit the profile of the case, yet a form of patriarchal violence is at play nonetheless, such as in instances when children are killed to hurt the mother or when acts of revenge lead to uninvolved individuals being affected.

The following discussion centered around age-related femicides connected to –among others- the question of whether legalizing measures of assisted dying could alleviate that number. Furthermore, the question to what extent or how non-binary and trans people can be represented in the femicide term was discussed.
